Earthquake in Taiwan disrupts services

Chunghwa Telecom announced that several undersea cables were damaged by the 6.4-magnitude earthquake and aftershocks which struck near the southern Taiwan city of Pingtung, s IDG News Service reports, according to TeleGeography CommsUpdate.

Services were disrupted March 3-5, but Chunghwa said that global communications and Internet services were restored by rerouting onto undamaged cables.

Cable sections affected to varying degrees are: SWM-3 (Southeast Asia - Middle East - Western Europe 3) between Taiwan and China's Guangdong Province; APCN2 (Asia Pacific Cable Network, Number 2) also between Taiwan and Guangdong; CUCN (China, U.S. Cable Network) linking Taiwan and China; APCN (Asia Pacific Cable Network) from Taiwan to Singapore; and FLAG (Fiber Optic Link Around The Globe) North Asia Loop (FNAL) between Taiwan and Hong Kong.
