18 Aug. 2010 |
Rafael Vargas, the president of the Dominican Republic’s telecoms regulator, the Instituto Dominicano de las Telecomunicaciones (Indotel), announced that he expects the installation of a U.K.-based Cable & Wireless (C&W) cable to triple available bandwidth and help to reduce interconnection costs in the country. The East-West cable will link Jamaica and the Cayman Islands in the west of the Caribbean, to the British Virgin Islands, while also landing in the Dominican Republic at Haina, TeleGeography CommsUpdate reported. According to Vargas commercial operations are expected to start by December. C&W executives reportedly have visited Indotel to detail preparation for the cable landing, which the regulator’s board has approved.
