Portugal Telecom (PT) announced plans to invest EUR650 million on capital expenditures in 2009 to boost its next-generation network program. The operator now expects to reach 1 million households across Portugal with the fiber-optic network by the end of this year.

PT has also announced an agreement with Corning Cable Systems to develop and deploy Gigabit Passive Optical Network (GPON) technology as part of its NGN plans.
